"The University of New Mexico Lobos men’s and women’s basketball programs have a tradition of excellence. The Lobos play in the brutal confines of the Pit in Albuquerque New Mexico, one of the loudest and toughest arenas for visiting teams in all of college basketball. New Mexico was a perennial powerhouse in the mid to late 1990’s, making regular visits to the NCAA tournament and the top 25. Major rivals of the Lobos basketball program include, Utah, New Mexico State, Colorado State, Air Force, BYU, Wyoming and SDSU."

"The Mountain West Conference originated on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight Universities - Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming - met in Denver and decided to form the MWC. The Conference officially began operations on July 1, 1999. The MWC participates in NCAA Division 1-A in the sports of Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Football as well as some small sports. The Mountain West Conference regularly is among the strongest conferences in the nation in Men’s and Women’s basketball with powerhouses including Utah, Wyoming UNLV, BYU and SDSU and well as in football where Colorado State University and Brigham Young is a regular in the national polls and several other schools are on the rise." |
