Detroit Red Wing History
"The Detroit Red Wings began their hockey history in 1926. The team was bought by local businessmen who took the Victoria Cougars of the Western Canadian Hockey League and moved the team to the Motor City. For the 1926 season, the Cougars played out of the Windsor Arena (more often referred to as the Border Cities Arena) on the Canadian side of the Detroit River. The Red Wings are one of the most storied franchises in NHL history boasting greats such as Gordie Howe and Darryl Sittler and future Hall of Famers Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan. The Red Wings have won 10 Stanley Cups, most recently in 2002 when they defeated the Carolina Hurricanes. This completed a span where the Red Wings won three Cups in six years."
