Calgary Flame History
"In the span of 22 years, the Calgary Flames have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL. Originally the Atlanta Flames before moving to Calgary in 1980, the team has won the Stanley Cup in 1989 and two Presidents Trophies, for first overall in the ’88 and ’89 seasons. The history of the Flames began when a group of Georgia businessmen, headed by Tom Cousins, were granted an NHL franchise in 1972. In the first game of the franchises history in Atlanta, the Flames and Buffalo Sabres played to a 1-1 tie. Ironically, the first game in Calgary also ended in a tie."
Calgary Flame Information
"The Flames play in the NHL’s Western Conference Northwest Division. Division rivals include the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks. Major rivals include Flames vs. Canucks, Flames vs. Stars and Flames vs. Coyotes."
Pengrowth Saddledome
"The Flames play in the Pengrowth Saddledome right outside the city center in Calgary. The building, which was financed entirely by the public, cost $173 million to build and opened in 1983. The arena, which can hold about 17,000 fans for hockey games, hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. It was the first building in North America to make room for the larger, international-sized surface. The Saddledome now host events such as Monster Truck Jams and Bruce Springsteen." |
