Columbus Blue Jacket History
"One of the newest teams in the NHL, Columbus arrived on the hockey landscape for the start of the 2000 season. In the teams first game it jumped out to 3-0 first period lead, but suffered a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks before a sellout crowd of 18,136 in their inaugural NHL game. Bruce Gardiner scores the first goal in team history at 7:34 of the first period. In a tragic moment of NHL history, Brittanie Cecil, 13, was struck by a deflected puck while attending a Blue Jackets game in 2002. She tragically died two days later becoming the first fan fatality in the NHL's 85-year history. The Blue Jackets honored her memory by wearing a heart shaped decal with her initials ""BNC"" on their helmets for the remainder of the season."
