"The Saints began their history in 1967 when the NFL awarded New Orleans a franchise. The team started in style as John Gillman took the opening kick-off 94-yards for a touchdown. However, the team would struggle for some years after. In 1978, although they posted another losing record QB Archie Manning was name the NFL’s MVP. In 1980, the team suffered through one of the worst seasons in NFL history going 1-15. The team didn’t record its first winning season until 1987 under head coach Jim Mora. Although they made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history the team lost to the Vikings 44-10. In 2000, the Saints won their first playoff game a thrilling triumph over the St. Louis Rams 31-28."
