Oakland Raider History
"The Raiders have called Oakland home since 1960 when the NFL awarded the city a franchise. Oakland's record for the first three years was dismal at 9-33 and average home attendance was only about 11,000. This was all turned around when Al Davis joined the Raiders in 1963. Oakland went from 1-13 in 1962 to 10-4 in 1963 and Davis was named the AFL Coach of the Year. In 1968, the Oakland Raiders vs. New York Jets game was cut off of television to begin the movie Heidi on NBC. The Raiders got 2 touchdowns in 9 seconds to win the game 43-32 - all of which the TV audience missed. This game has since been known as the “Heidi Game”. The Raiders won their first Super Bowl in 1977 when they beat the Vikings 32-14. In 1981, the Raiders became the first Wild Card team to win the Super Bowl when the beat the Eagles 27-10. Three years later the team would again capture the NFL title defeating the Redskins 38-9."
