Arizona Cardinal History
"The Cardinals are a charter member of the NFL and were founded in1898. The team holds the distinction of being the oldest, continuously run professional football team in the country. The team began in Chicago as the Racine Cardinals but in 1922 changed their name to the Chicago Cardinals. In 1947, the Cardinals stunned the league and went on to capture the NFL championship. To put that in perspective, two years prior to winning the championship, the Cardinal team was outscored by Philadelphia running back Steve Van Buren. In 1960, under new ownership the team left Chicago and reassumed play in St. Louis. Fourteen years later, the team brought its first division championship to St. Louis. After 28 years in St. Louis the team moved to Arizona in 1988 becoming the Phoenix Cardinals. In ’94, the team adopted the moniker Arizona Cardinals. The 1998 Cardinal team ended the franchise’s 15-year playoff draught and won its first playoff win since 1947. "
Arizona Cardinal Information
"The Cardinals play in the National Football Conference West Division. Division rivals include the St. Louis Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. Major rivalries include Cardinals vs. Eagles, Cardinals vs. Cowboys, Cardinals vs. Redskins and Cardinals vs. Giants."
Sun Devil Stadium
"The Cardinals play their home games in Sun Devil Stadium located in Tempe. The $1 million stadium opened in 1958 and seats approximately 73,000 and also serves as the home to the NCAA Arizona State Sun Devils. The stadium is the only one in the NFL situated on a college campus. Visiting fans sometimes outnumber Cardinals supporters, especially when the Cowboys come to town. In fact, on those weekends, Interstate 10 in New Mexico and Arizona is filled with Texas license plates. Until the team wins, though, the situation is not going to change too much. Phoenix residents, many from other places, are slow to change loyalties - especially the retirees, whose RVs and out-of-state plates are easy to spot in the parking lot. Still, the team slowly is building a following, mostly among the younger generation." |
