San Francisco 49er History

"The Niners entered the NFL landscape in 1949 when they became the first major professional sports team on the West Coast. Typical of the 49ers' fortunes in the early years of their franchise was the 1953 season. In the season opener, the 49ers and Eagles came to a benches-clearing brawl that prompted 150 fans to join in; and the 49ers had a chance to tie Detroit and win the league regular-season title - but failed on the last day when Detroit beat the Giants. In 1970, the Niners would play in their first NFC Championship game, losing to the Cowboys in what would become one of the greatest rivalries in the sport. In 1980, little known QB Joe Montana would edge out Steve DeBerg for the starting spot setting the stage for the next decade of success. In 1981, the most studied play in 49ers history came. Montana, rolling to his right and being pursued by Ed ``Too Tall'' Jones and Larry Bethea, threw a pass toward Dwight Clark in the end zone. The ball appeared to be too high for Clark, but Clark leapt high to grab it, then settled down into the end zone for the touchdown that sent the 49ers to their first Super Bowl and eventually their first championship. Three years later, in ’84 the Niners would again claim the NFL championship beating the Dolphins 38-16. The following year Bill Walsh would draft Jerry Rice to compliment Montana and Roger Craig. In ’88, the team again won the Super Bowl, their third of the decade. The following year, they repeated and Montana won his third Super Bowl MVP. The Niners were certainly the Team of the 80s. In 1992, the Niners would undergo a changing of the guard as Steve Young would step in to replace injured Montana. Three-years later Young would lead the Niners to their record fifth Super Bowl."

Candlestick Park

"The Niners play their home games in Candlestick Park located in downtown San Francisco. The $24.6 million stadium opened in 1960 and seats approximately 70,000 fans for football games. Home of the San Francisco Forty Niners and the former home of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, Candlestick Park is the only stadium in the country to have hosted six NFC Championship Games, three Western Division Championships, 12 NFC West Conference Games, two World Series, and two All-star games."
