"The Kroger Classic started in 1990. That year, Jim Dent won an abbreviated tournament, as well as a hefty $90,000 paycheck, when he shot eight-under par to win the two-day tournament. The next year in 1991 the Kroger Classic really took off, attracting 22 of the game's 25 best senior golfers, including crowd favorite Chi Chi Rodriguez, who topped the money list after winning four events already that season. The 1991 tournament was a memorable one for spectators, who stood and watched by the thousands as legends Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino were all paired together in round one, the first time the trio had ever played together in the Seniors Tour. The 2002 Kroger Classic witnessed Bob Gilder birdie the second hole of a playoff to capture the tournament over Tom Jenkins in the first event at the new TPC at River's Bend. It was the second year in a row that Jenkins lost in a playoff." |
