Ryder Cup Information

"Thirty-three matches have been played over the seventy-two years from the first official match in 1927 at Worcester, Massachusetts, to Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1999. The inaugural Ryder Cup Matches were held a year after an American contingent was defeated 13½ to 1½ at Wentworth, England, in an informal match. The British Team was virtually intact at Worcester, Mass., when the Ryder Cup Matches began. Only Walter Hagen, Bill Mehlhorn and Al Watrous returned for the U.S. The U.S. Team was superior on the Worcester greens and won nine matches. The U.S. completed a 9½ to 2½ victory, and the final scene on the 18th green typified the Matches’ theme: sportsmanship. Members of both teams walked out to meet Duncan and Turnesa and all walked off the green arm in arm. The most recent Ryder Cup, in 2001, bore a new sponsor, The De Vere Belfry for the 34th Ryder Cup Matches. The course hosted its fourth Ryder Cup Matches, the most for any site in event history. The De Vere Belfry's Brabazon Course, where Europe has held the Cup twice (1985, '89) and surrendered it once (1993), features some of the most unique holes ever in match play competition. The matches are played every second year, with the exception of the 34th Ryder Cup Matches and alternate between Europe and the United States of America. The 1997 match was the first European event to be played outside Great Britain."
