Bell South Classic Information
"In 1964, Atlanta businessman Jim Clay believed that Atlanta and professional golf were made for one another. Clay, together with six of his friends, purchased hundreds of acres of farmland near the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County. Atlanta Country Club arose from this purchase and became the annual site for the Atlanta Golf Classic tournament. Clay and fifty of his friends put up money to establish the Atlanta Classic Foundation which today continues to manage and promote the Classic. The first tournament, known as the Atlanta Golf Classic and Horse Show, was a success despite that fact that no clubhouse existed and a tornado hit the course on Thursday of tournament week. In 1967, the Classic officially joined the PGA. Many of those first volunteers continue to work today for the love of the tournament and the charity it supports. In 1982 Georgia Pacific sponsored this now established PGA event, and in 1989 BellSouth took over the title sponsorship reins -- a partnership that has resulted in tremendous tournament growth and close. The Classic's historical list of winners features some of the most renowned names in golf - Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Bob Charles, Calvin Peete, Hale Irwin, Larry Nelson, Tom Kite, Corey Pavin, John Daly, Tiger Woods, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, two-time champion Scott McCarron, and 2002 champion Retief Goosen." |
