New York Yankee History

"The Yankees are the most successful franchise in MLB history. Joining the league in 1903 the Yanks have won 38 A.L. pennants and 26 World Series. Legend such as Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Reggie Jackson and Mickey Mantle all called New York home. Originally named the Highlanders, the team changed its name to the Yankees in 1913. In 1920, the Yanks purchased the contract of Babe Ruth from the Red Sox, signaling the rise of one franchise and fall of another. In 1923, the Babe hits the first home run in Yankee Stadium history. In 1956, Don Larsen tosses the only perfect game in World Series history as the Yankees beat the Dodgers 2-0. In 1961, Roger Maris hits his 61 home run of the season, establishing the single season record the would not be broken until 1998. In 1973, George Steinbrenner buys the team, which would start a reign of terror, and winning, from ""The Boss"". In 1998, David Wells hurls the 14th perfect game in MLB history, the following year, David Cone throws the 15th such game. In 2002, the Yankees lose to the eventual World Series champs Anaheim Angels in the ALDS, making it the team’s earliest exit from the playoffs since 1980."
