Pittsburgh Pirate
History
"The Pirates trace their baseball roots back to 1887 when the team was the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. The team changed its name to the Pirates two years later. In 1901, led by Honus Wagner, the team wins its first National League pennant. In 1903, the Pirates won the first World Series game in MLB history defeating the Boston Americans 7-3. In 1909, the Pirates win their first title and duplicate the feat in 1925. In 1952, Ralph Kiner hits 37 home runs to win his seventh consecutive home run crown. Three years later, Roberto Clemente would make his debut for the club. In 1960, in Game Seven of the World Series at Forbes Field, Bill Mazeroski leads off the bottom of the ninth with the most dramatic home run in Series history, a blast over the left field wall, breaking a 9-9 tie with the Yankees and bringing Pittsburgh its third World Championship. In 1979, in game seven of the World Series at Baltimore, Willie Stargell's third World Series homer lifts the Pirates to a 4-1 win and their fourth World Championship. Stargell is named Series MVP after the Pirates erase a three-games-to-one deficit and ground the Orioles. In 1990, Barry Bonds becomes the second player in MLB history to hit 30 home runs and steal 50 bases."
Pittsburgh Pirate
Information
"The Pirates play in the National League Central Division. Division rivals include the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals. Major rivalries include Pirates vs. Cubs, Pirates vs. Giants and Pirates vs. Cardinals."
PNC Park
"The Pirates play their home games in PNC Park located in downtown Pittsburgh. The $262 million stadium opened in 2001 and can accommodate approximately 36,000 fans for a baseball game. From its north side site, the park provides a dramatic sweeping view of downtown Pittsburgh. The Allegheny River and Roberto Clemente (6th Street) Bridge also provide prominent landmarks in the ballpark vista. The steel structure, stone front and pilasters, dramatic masonry arches along the home-plate entryway, and a steel roof evoke memories of Forbes Field. The archways lead to a public arcade, open year round, that features shops, restaurants, and a Pirates Hall of Fame. The ballpark fits snuggly into the existing city grid, similar to classic urban parks like Wrigley and Fenway."
