Atlanta Brave History

"The Braves can trace their history back to the late 19th century when the team was the Boston Red Stockings. The team later changed its name, in 1883, to the Beaneaters. In 1914, the team officially became the Braves. In 1935, Babe Ruth played his last major league game for the Braves. In 1953, the Braves moved to Milwaukee were they finished second in the league behind home run champion Eddie Matthews and the league’s leader in wins, Warren Spahn. In 1954, Hank Aaron played his first game for the Braves batting .280 with 13 home runs. The following year, Aaron won the batting title. In ’57, the Braves won the World Series behind MVP Aaron. In 1966, the Braves moved to Atlanta. Eight years later, in 1974, Aaron would become the league’s all-time home run champions, passing Babe Ruth on April 8. The Braves became the team of the 90s with 6 World Series appearances, eight consecutive NLCS appearances and one World Series. The Braves accomplished this amazing stretch with some of the game’s best pitchers, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz."

Atlanta Brave Information

"The Braves play in the National League East Division. Division rivals include the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Florida Marlins and Montreal Expos. Major rivalries include Braves vs. Phillies, Braves vs. Mets, Braves vs. Yankees, Braves vs. Giants and Braves vs. Diamondbacks."

Turner Field

"The Braves play their home games in Turner Field located in downtown Atlanta. The $235 million stadium can seat 49,000 people and the playing field is 20-feet below sea level. The Braves took advantage of a unique opportunity during the events leading up to the 1996 Olympic Games. Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the multipurpose stadium they had played in since 1966, was becoming obsolete. The team wanted a new retro style ballpark like the one that had then recently opened in Baltimore. Meanwhile, a new stadium was needed for the 1996 Olympics. So, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and the Braves agreed to combine their efforts to build another multipurpose stadium."
