Seattle Supersonic History

"The Seattle Supersonics joined the NBA for the 1967-68 season and reached the upper echelon of the league during two different decades. The Sonics first reached the top of the mountain in the late 1970s. They reached the NBA Finals in two straight seasons, winning the crown in 1978-79 led by Gus Williams and coached by Lenny Wilkens. After a lull in the 1980s, Seattle was once again back in contention in the 1990s. The stars of these Sonics, power forward Shawn Kemp, was of the most creative slam dunkers of his era, and point guard Gary Payton- reflected the personality of their coach, the volatile and imaginative George Karl."

Key Arena

"The Sonics play in Key Arena in the heart of Seattle. The $110 million arena also serves as the home to the WNBA’s Storm. The building, which was constructed in 1983 and later refurbished, seats about 17,000 fans for basketball games. The Key Arena’s renovation was officially completed in late October, and already has hosted a world-class concert and several Thunderbirds and Sonics games. The facility, which was built on the foundations of the former Coliseum, boasts approximately 3,000 additional seats, three new seating levels, improved sight lines, and expanded concessions. The Key Arena also hosts entertainers such as David Gray and Yanni."
